Despite their social acceptance and low risk potential, many of these activities carry inherent risks for problem gambling behaviour. This is reflected in varying rates of problem gambling across different demographic subgroups and is influenced by structural characteristics, such as the brevity of payout intervals and the facility to chase losses.
Although the number of gambling activities has increased, prohibition is not the answer to this growing concern. Instead, governments should focus on regulating the two aspects that justify government intervention: addiction and predation. Moreover, future research should prioritise investigating emerging digital forms of gambling-like activities such as loot boxes and skin gambling in relation to their impact on gambling and problem gambling behaviours.
